I spoke on the phone today with a particular designer who swears by using a pair of subwoofers, one placed in each corner, and time/polarity aligned with the nearfields (and the whole system, nearfields and all, running through DSP).
This doesn't jibe with what I've been led to believe about rooms and monitoring systems, but the people who are using this setup are raving about it.
Can someone here shed any light on on what advantages corner-loaded subwoofers might have? Is it about minimizing axial modes?

I am in the process of designing a PCB for an insert switcher
and it occurs to me it might be of interest to others. I was just
going to switch XLR pins 2 and 3 only, per my normal but was
wondering if there is an advantage in switching pin 1 as well?My normal is pin 1 to shell to chassis.

My daughter broke the glass on her iPad mini so I took it in for repair. Unfortunately you need an appointment to even speak to a technician. The point being moot because Apple won't repair their products. Just a swap for $219...
A quick search found the replacement part for $23 and about 20 min effort. It would have been a 1 minute effort had Apple not gone "glue crazy" on this product - lame...
Personally I find it ridiculous that they won't even fix their own products. Even worse, it's outrageous that they would either a) toss perfectly good computers into the garbage contributing to the environmental problems we face or b) steal products back from customers for re-sale.

I need a tech to help sort out a few (mostly minor) issues with my Neotek Elite II (built in 2008). Most are patchbay related, but there is one channel slot that won't pan right to any buss (I already swapped channel strips, so it isn't in the module).I have a number of spare ICs, a complete channel strip, fader and a few pots. I also have a Fostex E-22 with a dead channel that needs looking at. I can assist as much or little as you want. I have a tech background, but haven't done much in years - the production end of things kind of took over my life.
I'm located in Port Charlotte, which is about 3 hours drive from Miami/Lauderdale, 1-1/2 from Tampa, 2-1/2 from Orlando. I will provide overnight accommodations, and can promise excellent food and drink.
Money is no problem; my cash reserves are ample and I'm not a cheapskate - bill me whatever you think is fair, and I'll pay in cash. One channel of my Mk1 had become noisy and overall the unit was sounding murky.
Send off to Rob Harvey who returned it sounding to my ears like a Maselec with an edge-transparent with a light color. He also added API transformers on a push-pull pot to in/out engage.New life to an EQ. I had grabbed a Sontec 250ex to take over duties while it was away and placed on the S&M insert. No way I can give up that flexibility now even with the 315 back.

Avrei bisogno di un piccolo favore (se si può definire così)! Ho notato che da circa una settimana il forum langue un po' e che invece sul gruppo si stanno scatenando parecchio, pubblicando ogni genere di post, dalle foto ai video, passando per le poesie (stamattina...). I always say the house sound man and monitor guy can either be your best friend or your worst nightmare. This guy was a nightmare.
The venue was the St. George Theater in Staten Island NY. The guys name is Steve. I don't know, nor am interested in his last name. I won't work with him ever again.
The show was a concert video for Steinway sponsored artist Ann Sweeten. This petite blond pianist/composer is named perfectly. Totally professional, easy to work with, a consummate performer.
Our load in/soundcheck was 2:00PM last Saturday. The minute we got into this massive, 2400 seat, gold gilded palace, the tension was thick in the air. This guy Steve clearly had a hangover and did not want to be there. The house manager was ready to pick a fight with the video crew over camera placements and with me over mic placements, even though the audience would fill less than 10% of the seats available.
I moved my mics, no problem. The video director moved his cameras, no problem. We are happy to accommodate. So then Steve started in on Ann. She needed a vocal mic to talk to the audience and by what he told her, she was worried he would forget to turn on her mic. She told me she had been as nice as possible to him, but he was being a real jerk. She didn't know what to do, between the manager giving the crew a hard time and the FOH not wanting to work with her. Now the guy had three mics, high and low piano splits and the vocal split. The only mic he had to touch during the show was the vocal. How easy could it get?
Ann gave us a sound check for a couple of hours in the late afternoon and I got my mix together and then set up the audio feeds to the cameras as the video guys were clueless about audio. During the entire afternoon, the house fool never once brought up the piano mics in the mains.
When the show started, he was getting pops and sent a stage hand to me to tell me to fix it. He was getting a passive split, nothing through my system and my mix was perfect. So I was not going to start moving cables during the show, when I knew the issue was in his snake or his PM5 console. At that point, the recording was more important than the concert anyway and I proved to his stagehand that my system was not the issue.
The show went well. Ann played beautifully. But as the curtain went down at the end, Ann who had been in a cast with a torn Achilles tendon stood up without the cast to take a bow and nearly fell over. I saw this from the wings and stood up to help her. Before I ran out on the stage, in almost a reflexive/subconscious motion, I clicked Command/S on my computer running Pro Tools.
When I came back to the side of the stage, Steve was yelling and throwing cables around, saying he was really pissed off at the camera guys for some comment they made about his mix. I then realized this this dip shit had yanked the power to my entire rig! He shut off my computer, console, monitor, speakers and interface by yanking the mains. Argggggg!
I yelled at him to plug my line back in so I could check my gear. I was not sure if I had clicked Save or not at that point and was afraid we had lost the entire recording. Luckily, I had clicked Save and nothing was lost. No thanks to Steve.

"Hello, I have a question that I didn't see in your FAQ. I have a hard drive full of ISO files that I want to convert to MKV to work with my Roku. A) Does your software allow me to set a minimum length for conversions and ignore the rest? B) Will the file names stay the same during batch converting? When it comes to approaches people use to decide where to place the speakers in their room, I've come across a couple different ways that people seem to go about it and wanted to see what the consensuses is around here?
When reading the Howie Weinberg Q&A thread on GS, when asked about his room calibration:
Q. How often do you calibrate your room?
HW "George Augsperger built this room and it is the best sounding room I've ever heard, and I've been doing this for 35 years. I've never had a room sound so good so fast. I put my speakers where I thought they should go, and they sounded incredible. That's the sign of a well designed room."
I go about it the same way, not really scientific but it works. Minor adjustments till I heard what I wanted to hear. Confirmation through translation.
There are also quite a bit of technical ways to measure etc. and if would be cool if people could chime in on how they arrived at that place and any struggles they ran into along the way.

Finally MFiT has come to my door. Most of my work is hi res or sacd, and local cd mastering clients that haven't asked for it yet, until now.
I've never looked at iTunes being 'other audio' then what's on the CD, and most likely the CD will be ripped many times.
But does that justify bringing down the audio on the CD master by the same amount to make it MFiT as well?Also I'm wondering if you find that the clients accept more dynamic masters in general because of mfit making them more aware?
