Pastor Maldonado believes that Williams is "not that far" from being the best team on the grid this season.
After winning his first ever grand prix in Barcelona - the first Williams victory in eight years - Maldonado is one of the favourites for the Monaco Grand Prix this weekend. He admitted that the close nature of the field would make another win difficult, but said the improvement Williams has shown means it is moving closer to the front.
"It's really special to win, especially the first one," Maldonado said. "But for sure it's going to be difficult now because the cars and the teams are so close. Everything can make a difference, we need to put everything together to make a step forward and I need to say that Williams is doing a very good job at the moment.
"All the people are very motivated, they are pushing so hard - me too - there's a very good feeling and atmosphere in the team but still we need to improve our car. We are not at 100% at the moment; we are not the best team but we are not that far (away), we are there and we need to try to improve every time."
Looking specifically at Monaco, Maldonado said that he was confident of being quick but that it could be difficult to find clear track to display the pace.
"I've always been so quick here, especially in GP2 and World Series as well. Last year I was doing a job - I was P6 (before being taken out by Lewis Hamilton) - but it's always difficult, it's always difficult. With this kind of track you never know, with the traffic, with everything. The track is going to change a lot during the weekend, we need to follow the track and we need to have very good balance in the car as well and be ready at the right time on the track. I will do my best again and we'll see; I think it's still possible to be competitive here."

Following his victory at the Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday at Barcelona, Williams Formula One driver Pastor Maldonado gives his thoughts on his spectacular first ever win in Formula One and the season so far.
You visited the team’s factory in Oxfordshire today, what was the atmosphere like?
"I arrived at the factory this morning and everybody I have met has been congratulating me and there seems to be a lot of optimism about what we can achieve this season. We had a gathering this morning with all of the people in the factory to celebrate our win and this allowed me to thank all of them for their hard work."
After your victory in Barcelona do you think you have a realistic chance of winning at the next race in Monaco?
"We will certainly do our best. Our package is definitely getting better and although we don’t have the quickest car right now, we are improving very quickly. I have always liked Monaco and after Sunday I am certainly full of confidence."
Last year Williams scored only 5 points, but now you have a competitive car that has won a race. What do you think has caused such a dramatic up-turn in your performance?
"We have a new technical team and they seem to be making a very positive impact already. I also have more experience now compared to last year and this is certainly helping me. I don’t think there is one single thing that has led us to improve this year, but a number of little changes that when put together have made us more competitive on track."
You showed no signs of nerves when battling with Fernando Alonso in Barcelona. Did you learn valuable lessons from your encounter in Melbourne when you crashed out on the final lap?
"In Melbourne I was pushing very hard to get as many points as possible for the team and perhaps pushed a little too hard. After last year the team were desperate for a strong start to the season and I wanted as many points as possible. I learnt from that and the experience certainly made me a stronger driver in Barcelona. Fernando is a tough competitor with a lot of talent so it was a tough battle but this time I came out on top."
Some people have said that you are a paid driver who entered Formula One because of your sponsorship backing. Do you think your win has answered these critics?
"I am very lucky to have such amazing support from Venezuela. The finances I can bring have helped me reach Formula One but also help develop the car and that is crucial in being successful. I don’t focus on these comments, preferring to do my talking on the track and do the best job I can for the team. Hopefully my performance in Spain has shown that I have the talent to be one of the best drivers."
We have had 5 winners now in the first 5 races. Do you think this unpredictability is good for Formula One?
"This has been one of the most competitive seasons we have seen in many years and to have such a strong level of competition between the teams and drivers is a good thing in my opinion. It is boring for fans when one driver dominates, and this season feels a bit like GP2 with the driver being able to play a big part in the performance of the car. The tyres also allow teams to play around with different strategies so there is always the opportunity to move up if you take a gamble. We have worked hard on getting our tyres to perform well and this was certainly the case in Spain where I could do a longer final stint than others."

Tuesday 22 May at 08:35 : May 22 (GMM) The F1 car photographed amid the charred remains of Williams' burnt-out garage in Barcelona will be back in action this weekend at Monaco.We reported last week that an initial inspection of Bruno Senna's Renault-powered FW34, which was sitting in the pits when the fire broke out during the team's celebrations for Pastor Maldonado's victory last Sunday, showed it had emerged with minimal damage.A spokesman has now confirmed that Senna will race the very same chassis on the streets of Monaco this week.Otherwise, the garage fire "somewhat hampered" Williams' preparations for the famous race in the Principality, chief engineer Mark Gillan admitted."But the impact has been mitigated by what can only be described as a herculean effort by the factory and our suppliers to restock both the damaged equipment and car parts," he said.Gillan also said rival teams made "generous offers" of help.Maldonado's chassis was safely in parc ferme at the time of the fire.

The Monaco Grand Prix weekend is set for a dry start tomorrow. But the forecast for qualifying and race day is harder to predict and includes a chance of rain.
As is traditional at Monaco the first day of practice takes place on Thursday with no F1 action on Friday.
Thursday practice will be held in warm temperatures with largely clear skies seeing a peak of around 25C during the second session.
However a developing low pressure weather system is likely to affect the region from Friday evening. Rain is likely but whether it will hang around long enough to affect qualifying remains to be seen.
Increased cloud cover should bring the temperatures down by around 5C.
Looking ahead to race day, the forecast is made more tricky by the fact it’s 24 hours’ farther off than usual. At this stage conditions for the race look set to be dry but, again, not as warm as on Thursday.
You can keep an eye on developments in the forecast using the weather radar link below. And as usual we’ll have live weather updates during every session on F1 Fanatic Live.
It’s also the Indianapolis 500 this weekend. As IndyCars do not race on ovals in the wet, the weather forecast here is even more important. Fortunately a dry, sunny day with temperatures in the 30-35C range are expected for the 96th running of the race.

Can the amazing run of 2012 results translate into a memorable piece of history as the sport returns to its most iconic venue? Dating back to 1929, there are now more reasons than ever to watch the Monaco Grand Prix.
Motorsport fans are spoilt for choice this weekend. Not only is Monte Carlo playing host to F1, GP2, GP3 and Formula Renault 3.5, but we also have Formula 2 racing at the Nürburgring and, of course, the Indianapolis 500. So, as has been the case on a number occasions in the past, we have Monaco and Indy on the same weekend. Perhaps it’s time to get a few beers and ice-creams in?

On a more serious note, could we really be witnessing a sixth different victor from as many races in 2012? The simple answer is ‘yes’, we really could. Both Mark Webber and, amazingly, Lewis Hamilton are still yet to win this year and there is also the not so small matter of Lotus; the E20 didn’t show what it was capable of between Australia and China, but since then Räikkönen and Grosjean have scored 60 points between them in Bahrain and Spain. Furthermore, the chassis is extremely nimble and either half of that duo could find themselves atop the podium this weekend. If that does happen, we would be treated to not only a sixth winning driver in 2012 but also a sixth winning team – and how fantastic that would be.
Ferrari boss Stefano Domenicali said a funny thing after the Spanish Grand Prix, noting that unfortunately there are not 20 teams to ensure a different winner from each race this year…because it feels like that could happen! Incidentally, I was also intrigued by how the Italian went out of his way in complimenting Hamilton’s drive to eighth place from the back of the grid in Barcelona; I am not for one second suggesting that the Scuderia is about to approach Lewis for a 2013 drive (even though that is technically possible), but I was impressed by Stefano’s openness. You certainly wouldn’t have heard that in the days of Enzo Ferrari, or indeed Jean Todt.
The only impact Pérez hopes for this time is with the podium
Another team to watch this weekend is Sauber – the baby Ferrari, if you like. Last year, Kamui Kobayashi scored a mightily impressive top five result; he did the same last time out in Spain and reckons he could have a go at challenging for a podium in Monaco. So perhaps we’ll see a Lotus one-two with a Sauber joining them on the rostrum…the mind boggles. I am speculating, of course, but the glorious thing is that such speculation could actually become a reality this season.
For the first time in a very long time, the car plays a big part but the driver is really able to make a difference - and that is exactly how motorsport should be. Watch out for Sergio Pérez too; he’s back after the shunt which defined his career last year and he is as determined as ever to prove what he can really do. He will doubtless be pleased that the huge bump in the braking zone of the chicane is now a thing of the past.
Thanks to Pirelli, their formula means qualifying is no longer the first part of a race; yes, it is still critical and not least in Monaco, but raw abilities and strategy can now contribute to succeeding from further back on the grid. I am convinced that Juan Manuel Fangio, the first winner of an F1 championship race in Monaco 62 years ago, would agree with that; after all, it was he who coined the idea of winning at the slowest possible speed and, with tyre management the hot topic of the moment, that really is what it’s all about in 2012.
Don't be surprised to see huge trains of cars jostling for position on Sunday afternoon
In 2011, Sebastian Vettel gave us a brilliant battle by pitting only once, meaning Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button – on their respective two and three-stop plans – caught up and sought to hunt him down. We all know what happened in the end. The question is: can a one-stopper be possible again? That would be unlikely, not least as the Super Soft tyre is set to be raced for the first time this year, naturally throwing a selection of unknowns into the mix. But, as tyre and pit-stop strategies become intertwined, you can bet your penthouse suite on several trains of cars stacking up behind one another, which in-turn could result in one driver sprinting away, daring overtaking in Monaco or perhaps some contact here and there.
Engineers say Formula 1 is a mathematical equation. I’m no Carol Vorderman (or Archimedes, for those of you who don’t know your British celebrities) but surely F1+Monaco+Pirelli+2012 equals whatever the algebraic code is for: we have one hell of a race on our hands. Can’t wait for this one.

A police investigation is underway into the race organisers of the Italian Grand Prix. According to publication la Repubblica, seven members of the company Autodromo Nazionale Monza SIAS SpA, including its director, are under scrutiny for sending out false invoices and organising free tickets to race events.
Several policemen from the Guardia di Finanza are reported to have stormed into the legendary track from 7:30 in the morning, remaining for several hours in order to trawl through documents and computer files in the offices of directors Enrico Ferrari and Beghella Bartoli.
There is also examination underway relating to a potential corrupt running of the circuit restaurant, which is located under the grandstands of the start/finish straight. The homes of both Ferrari and Bartoli have also been searched.
This year’s Italian Grand Prix will be staged on 9 September.f

1982Riccardo Patrese took victory in the Monaco Grand Prix that nobody wanted to win. In a bizarre turn of events, four potential race winners either crashed out or ran out of fuel in the last two laps. Spitting rain in the closing stages made the track treacherous and Keke Rosberg was the first of the front runners to crash on lap 65. Then Alain Prost spun into the barriers on the way down to Tabac, handing the lead to Patrese. But as the Brabham driver got half-way through the penultimate lap, he ended up entering the Loews hairpin backwards and had to concede position to Didier Pironi and Andrea de Cesaris before rejoining. Just three corners later, however, Pironi's Ferrari sputtered to a halt and then on the final lap de Cesaris's Alfa Romeo also stopped out of fuel. This put Patrese back in the lead, but the drama didn't end there, as second place Derek Daly fired his car into the barriers at the Swimming Pool complex. Patrese picked his way through the carnage and very slowly and carefully crossed the line to take his first Formula One win.
1993Ayrton Senna won his sixth and final Monaco Grand Prix, setting a new record for wins at the prestigious event. The weekend started badly when he had a heavy accident at Saint Devote in practice and bruised his thumb. He admitted he couldn't drive at 100% after that and he qualified third behind Michael Schumacher and Alain Prost. Prost jumped the start and was penalised with a stop-go penalty, putting him out of contention. Schumacher assumed the lead and was dominating Senna when a hydraulic failure on lap 32 brought his race to an end. Senna came through to win and was speechless after the race. "I simply don't have words," he said. "It is not just the six victories, but the results achieved here, throughout the years, with different cars and different engines, under different conditions."
2004Jarno Trulli put an end to Michael Schumacher's dominant start to the season by winning the Monaco Grand Prix. Trulli was the class of the field all weekend, qualifying on pole and leading the race from start to end. His team-mate Fernando Alonso was his closest competitor early on, but he crashed out midway through the race while trying to lap Ralf Schumacher in the tunnel. It was a bizarre incident but not a patch on what followed. Under the ensuing safety car Michael Schumacher hit the barriers at the same place and claimed to be brake tested by Juan Pablo Montoya, who had been lapped at the time. The upshot was an exciting end to the race, during which Jenson Button in the BAR closed down Trulli but was unable to find a way past. It was Trulli's one and only win to date.
1971Jackie Stewart put on a dominant display over the 1971 Monaco Grand Prix weekend to take pole position by over a second and win the race comfortably by 25 seconds. While Stewart was clearly in a class of his own, it was a young Ronnie Peterson, in just his second season, who provided the action further down the field. He raced from eighth on the grid to second, passing Jacky Ickx and Jo Siffert in the process on the tight and twisty circuit.
1972Formula One's most experienced driver Rubens Barrichello was born in Sao Paolo. With over 290 races to his name and 11 victories, his career has spanned 18 seasons during which he has driven for six different teams. His most successful season was as at Ferrari in 2002, but due to his No. 2 status to Michael Schumacher he was never a serious contender for the title. At Brawn in 2009 he had the car and the freedom within his team to challenge for the championship, but finished the season third with just two wins to his team-mate Jenson Button's six.

Jenson Button says he has "a little bit of unfinished business" at Monaco following last year's grand prix.
In what was set to be a classic race, Button had led but a three-stop strategy dropped him behind Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso on track. While the leading two had only stopped once, the rapidly-degrading Pirelli tyres had set up a classic finale as the trio ran nose to tail with 18 laps remaining. Unfortunately a late red flag allowed all three to change tyres without penalty and resulted in a procession to the finish, robbing Button the chance of victory.
Ahead of returning to Monaco this weekend, Button admitted that the 2011 race would act as motivation for him.
"I remember last year having a fantastic car beneath me and feeling really confident that I could challenge for the win," Button said. "As it happened, circumstances beyond our control worked to pull that opportunity away from us, but I go back to Monte-Carlo with a little bit of unfinished business. I'd love to win for Vodafone McLaren Mercedes, the team has a great history around Monaco and I'd love to add my name to McLaren's Monaco winners' list."
Team principal Martin Whitmarsh said that McLaren would be looking to bounce back after a number of errors so far this season.
"For the entire Vodafone McLaren Mercedes team, too, we travel to the south of France feeling determined to string together a faultless weekend and to demonstrate our full potential," he said. "I have absolutely no doubts that the team is feeling very strong, and a win at Monaco would be the perfect fillip for their efforts."

Bernie Ecclestone says organisers of the planned French Grand Prix have had enough chances to sign a contract for the race.
The race was last held at the Magny Cours circuit in central France in 2008 and, since then, there have been plans to host it at numerous other locations including on the streets of Paris, in Disneyland Paris and at the Paul Ricard track near Marseilles.
The most recent plans were focussed on bringing the race to Paul Ricard which last hosted the French Grand Prix in 1990 and would need significantly updating to do so again. These plans had stalled before the election earlier this month of new president Francois Hollande to replace the outgoing Nicolas Sarkozy.
"The French have had enough opportunity to make it happen and didn't," Ecclestone said. "They promised all these things like the streets of Paris and Disney. It's very political. I don't know if would have been different if Sarkozy had been re-elected. I have no idea. Whilst he was in power they could have signed. They have had a contract and all they had to do is sign. They never reached an agreement with Ricard anyway but it would need investment to build up grandstands and the Paddock Club isn't big enough."
There have been reports that Ecclestone has also asked the promoters of the Canadian Grand Prix to upgrade the track in Montreal in order to retain the race when its contract expires in 2014. However, Ecclestone says he is completely set on staying there.
"There's a little big of magic about Montreal. Everybody likes Montreal," he says. "The circuit in Montreal is nice and looks nice on TV, you can walk there from the centre of town if you wanted to. We used to be in Toronto and you could never do that there. They propose things to us but Montreal is ideal. The circuit layout is nice, it looks nice. It is near the city. Everybody is happy in the city. We will renew the deal there. We will be there."
Likewise, Ecclestone says that the contract to host the German Grand Prix at the Nürburgring, which expired last year, will also be renewed. The future of the race at the Nürburgring was thrown into doubt earlier this year when the local government terminated the race promoter's 30 year lease on the circuit. The explanation for this was given by Roger Lewentz, minister for the Interior, Sport and Infrastructure who said that "we want to continue with Formula One at the Nürburgring, but at a reasonable cost to the government." It looked like the government had thrown the gauntlet down to Ecclestone but it hasn't deterred him.
"At the Nürburgring there was an internal problem with the promoter. Their contract has run out so we will renew it when they know who to renew it with. I am happy to do it," he says. It is a surprise to hear Ecclestone talking about renewing multiple deals without the threats of going to rival venues which he has become famous for. Recent evidence suggested that he may be losing his touch as it was suggested that the Korean Grand Prix has managed to slash its estimated $50m hosting fee in half however, Ecclestone denies that this happened.
"We sold Korea the television rights and other rights but took them back so we effectively reduced what they had to pay us. We reduced the amount of money they pay us because we took back a lot of rights that we sold them. I think they are managing OK. They couldn't use what they bought."
Ecclestone is even completely happy with the Bahrain Grand Prix and says that "there was no damage to the F1 brand by going to Bahrain. Why would there be? The guy that was demonstrating didn't eat for a few months. I'm surprised that the journalists that were supporting it didn't do the same thing. Not going to the race would have been easier."
He says that despite the fear before the race, "the protesters weren't there to attack anybody. They weren't there to attack us. They were going to use the event to demonstrate and get their word out." In contrast, he adds "I wouldn't have wanted to go into those streets when we had the problems in London."

Timo Glock is hoping that the Monaco Grand Prix will provide "quite a few opportunities" for Marussia.
While the racing at the front of the grid has been hugely unpredictable so far this season with five different winners from the opening five races, the rear has had a familiar look as Caterham, Marussia and HRT fill the back three rows. In Monaco, however, the field will be closer together due to the tight nature of the street circuit, and Glock says that could open up some chances for Marussia if it can enjoy a smooth build-up.
"Monaco is every time a very special weekend," Glock said. "It's the first real street circuit and always a big event; a big show. It is also a possibility for smaller teams as there are so many different factors which can come into play and situations which are out of your control more than any other circuit. If we have a trouble-free lead up to the weekend, then things can go well on race day with what are normally quite a few opportunities presenting themselves.
"For my side I hope we will show that we have got on top of the car balance issues which have affected my car in the last two races. I love Monaco so it will be fantastic to have a good car and really attack the race weekend. I can't wait to arrive there and get going."

Maldonado lucky to be in Monaco after severely injuring a marshal in 2005
Pastor Maldonado has a forgettable past at Monaco
May 23 (GMM) A favourite for victory this weekend, Williams driver Pastor Maldonado is lucky to even be gearing up to race in the Principality at all after nearly killing a marshal when racing at the venue back in 2005.
Bild newspaper reports that the Venezuelan, who defied his ‘pay driver’ critics by winning for Williams in Spain two weeks ago, was actually banned after a horrorific incident on the streets of Monte Carlo seven years ago.
Racing in the Renault World Series in 2005, the then 25-year-old ignored yellow flags before striking and severely injuring a marshal.
Organisers of the Monaco grand prix reacted by banning Maldonado from the street circuit for life.
Bild revealed that Maldonado’s wealthy father intervened, promising to pay for the marshal’s recovery and rehabilitation from a broken back.
That intervention saved Maldonado’s future Formula One career, as no team would hire a regular driver that cannot participate in the sport’s most famous race.
Maldonado is a favourite for victory this weekend, with his Williams now acknowledged as arguably the best in the entire field when it comes to low-speed traction.
In his four seasons of GP2 between 2007 and 2010, Maldonado finished on the podium each time, winning and achieving pole position twice. In 2006, he won in Formula Renault.
Last year, in qualifying for his first Monaco Grand Prix, he qualified his Williams FW33 in eighth place, comfortably ahead of Rubens Barrichello.
“He is very good at Monaco,” agreed Barrichello.
In the 2011 race, Maldonado was fighting for fifth when he crashed with Lewis Hamilton.
“If the last sector in Barcelona is the marker, then the Williams will be unbeatable in Monte Carlo,” Germany’s AM&S quotes Dr Helmut Marko.
The breakthrough success in Barcelona has piqued the interest of Maldonado’s native Venezuela, having not had an F1 points scorer since the ignominious Johnny Cecotto in 1983.
“My country will be following every second of the next race,” Maldonado is quoted by O Estado de S.Paulo newspaper.
“I love street circuits, this one in particular. My style of driving fits perfectly with Monaco. I am ready to get another great result.”

Maldonado and Lotus head to Monaco as favourites
May 22 (GMM) Pastor Maldonado is a genuine contender for victory this weekend at Monaco, reports Auto Motor und Sport,arguing that the previously derided ‘pay driver’s' breakthrough win in Spain was not necessarily a one-off.
Some, including reigning world champion team Red Bull’s Dietrich Mateschitz, have written off the 2012 season so far as little more than a Pirelli fuelled “lottery”.
But having offered odds of 500-1 prior to Barcelona, Maldonado is now 16-1 to repeat his victory in the famous Principality, according to the major British bookmaker William Hill.
AM&S reckons on “two main favourites” for Monaco, the other being McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton.
“Both (Hamilton and Maldonado) are proven Monaco specialists, who were able to win on the Cote d’Azur in any class long before Formula One,” read the report.
“Hamilton was the fastest man in Barcelona but was hampered by the fuel problem in qualifying. And in addition to his Monaco-talent, Maldonado’s Williams has incredible traction.”
However, journalist Tobias Gruner acknowledged that “whoever has bet on the favourite this season has not been happy so far”.
Two-time title winner Emerson Fittipaldi would bet on Lotus.
“I see them as the most consistent team,” the Brazilian legend is quoted by Globo.
The 2012 ‘lottery’ has polarised F1 pundits, but former driver and Williams mentor Alex Wurz counts himself among the delighted.
“There have been six winners so far: five different drivers, and formula One itself,” the Austrian toldSportwoche.

Mercedes F1 boss Brawn back at work in Monaco
May 23 (GMM) Mercedes team principal Ross Brawn should be firing on all cylinders as he returns to the pitwall in Monaco this weekend, after sitting out the recent Spanish grand prix due to illness, when a scarcity of extra information triggered speculation about his retirement.
One rumour was that he is seriously ill, whilst another was that his absence may in fact be due to his German employer’s high-stakes spat with Bernie Ecclestone.
The latter theory gained traction since Barcelona, with acting team boss Nick Fry taking a much higher than usual profile, including naming Paul di Resta as a possible 2013 successor for Michael Schumacher.
Explaining his absence, Brawn told Bild newspaper: “On the Tuesday before Barcelona I felt unwell so I went to the doctor and then stayed a night in hospital for some tests.
“When I got home, I decided on the advice of doctors to give myself a weekend off, to be sure that I am fit for Monaco,” the Briton said.
Partly because of Brawn’s deputy Fry’s recent comments, and also due to his paltry points tally and his crash with Bruno Senna, rumours about Schumacher’s future have intensified since Spain.
“A lot has been said and written,” acknowledged Brawn, “but we should not forget that we – the team – have let him down in three of the fives races, not delivering the job we should have.
“We must do better,” Brawn, who worked closely with Schumacher during the seven time world champion’s ultra successful Ferrari era, added.
“We saw Michael’s real quality again in the first race, so it’s for that reason that I believe we will see him on the podium this year.”
As for a possible contract extension for the 43-year-old, Brawn insisted: “When the time comes, we will sit down together and talk about the future.
“I’m sure it will become clear very quickly in what direction we will go.”

Di Resta would welcome chance to race for Mercedes
May 23 (GMM) Force India driver Paul di Resta has hinted he would leap at the chance to replace Michael Schumacher at Mercedes.
The German marque’s Brackley based chief executive Nick Fry this week earmarked impressive Force India driver di Resta, earlier a Mercedes protege, as an ideal successor should Schumacher not stay beyond his 2012 contract.
Asked about Fry’s comments and the media speculation on Wednesday, di Resta said in Monaco: “It’s always nice to have the press interest and people looking out for you, but I need to stay focused on doing the best job I possibly can.”
He told Sky Sports News: “It’s no secret that I want to be a race winner and world champion — and to do that, I need to be in a great car.”

May 21 (GMM) Nick Heidfeld insists he has not yet called time on his Formula One career, despite being out of a drive since he was axed by Lotus after last year’s Hungarian GP.
Never a race winner, the 35-year-old was a highly respected F1 regular dating back to 2000, scoring 13 podiums and driving for teams including Williams, Sauber and – as recently as 2011, Renault (now known as Lotus).
But the German’s latest foray is into endurance sports car racing, giving the impression that Heidfeld acknowledges that his F1 career is over.
“You’d think that, but it’s not the case,” he insisted on Monday to Auto Motor und Sport.
“Of course it’s not easy to find a place, otherwise I’d be there already. I’m having quite a lot of fun in sports cars and we’ll just have to see what the future holds.”
Heidfeld admits it has been “very difficult” to accept that “in 2012 at least” he is no longer an F1 driver.
But he is still an avid fan. Commenting on the topsy-turvy season seen so far, with five different winners, Heidfeld enthused: “It’s incredible.
“Even the teams I think don’t really know what’s going on. It’s most enjoyable for the viewers and I think also for many of the teams, who know that they have a good chance every now and then.
“That’s unlike the past few years, when only Red Bull and maybe McLaren could win and the rest are fighting for the lower places.”
Heidfeld also commented on his countryman Michael Schumacher’s widely reported recent criticism of Pirelli’s difficult 2012 tyres.
“He complained a little bit more than normal and that will always be cooked hotter than if someone else had said it,” said Heidfeld.
“Of course, as a driver, you always want better tyres, but as always you have to adapt to the situation. Sometimes it works out well for you, sometimes less.”
Finally, he was asked who will lift the crown in 2012, answering simply: “Lewis Hamilton.”

May 22 (Preview by James Rossi) The jewel in the crown of Formula 1, as it is often tiredly referred to, plays host to another round of a 2012 season which is proving to be as hard to read as an Ayn Rand novel – this is Monaco, the sixth round of the 2012 World Championship.
There are very few certainties in F1. You can be sure that Bernie Ecclestone will deliberately cause strife to achieve his goals, and that Sebastian Vettel will never relinquish his finger celebration. Otherwise, this season is proving to be utterly fascinating in its level of unpredictability.
Situated a few miles west of the Italian border and with the Mediterranean to look over each morning, Monte Carlo is home to the largest population inside the principality of Monaco. Due to loose tax laws and the non-existence of income tax, it has attracted large foreign investment and many millionaires to its glittering seascape and high-rise apartments for the best part of half a century.
The Monegasque culture therefore goes hand in hand with the fast-paced, dazzling nature of F1 and their relationship is one of the oldest on the calendar.The Monte Carlo circuit typically favours short-wheelbases, nimble suspensions and drivers an excellent “slapsies” record. Concentration is key between the tight confines of the circuit. Whilst we gawp at the beauty of one of the 24 dumping a wheel in the dust as they negotiate a fast turn, anything similar will result in a hefty invoice being sent to any one of the manufacturer’s by a carbon fibre producer.
McLaren have shown to produce fundamentally quick one-lap speed, and in the hands of Lewis Hamilton especially, will be tough to beat during Saturday’s qualifying session. As the grid order almost always dictates the race result, it’s almost certain that we could see a sixth different winner in six races. That said, the MP4-27’s strengths have been most illustrated during quick, high downforce corners – which Monaco does not possess.
Both Red Bull and Lotus were also very quick through the last sector at the Circuit de Catalunya, which bodes well for the slow nature of Monte Carlo. However, with such a mix at the front of the grid, it’s almost impossible to predict who will come out on top by using car performance as an indicator. What 2012 has shown us is that the driver is beginning to make more of a difference than the previous years in an age where aerodynamics and electrics preceded driver ability.
This season certainly favours the thinking driver, who can balance heavy fuel loads, tyre degradation and still maintain a race-winning pace at the right moments. It is no surprise to see Fernando Alonso head the field in this respect, widely considered to be the most complete driver on the grid.
One thing is for certain, a repeat of the fascinating 1992 battle between Ayrton Senna and Nigel Mansell is set to return, as the differing levels of tyre degradation will be certain to close the field up towards the end of the grand prix. With no discernible overtaking opportunities through the Monegasque streets, it will be edge-of-your seat action as various strategies home into each other in the last few laps.
The DRS zone will be on the start/finish straight, with the detection zone on the entry to the penultimate Rascasse corner. As last year, DRS in the tunnel is banned on safety grounds.Early weather forecasts indicate a mixed weekend is once again possible, with showers predicted primarily for Saturday’s running. As ever though, this forecast is subject to change as the week progresses.
Will Pastor Maldonado draw upon his debut victory and excellent record on the streets of Monte Carlo? Will Lewis Hamilton break his 2012 duck? Or are we set for yet another debut victor in the form of Kimi Raikkonen?

Pirelli insists they are open to changes when it comes to the supply of qualifying tyres, saying they are willing to provide teams with Q3-only rubber.
Under current regulations, drivers are forced to use the same tyres they qualify on in the race.
However, the rule has created a bit of a headache as a lot of teams are opting not to send their drivers out in Q3 in an attempt to save tyres for the race itself.
In an attempt to get fans to see a lot more action during the final qualifying session, Pirelli says they are ready to supply teams with Q3-only tyres.
The Italian manufacturer's motorsport boss Paul Hembery says they can make the switch straightaway, but warns that teams are not actually keen on changes.
"We could do it immediately," he told Autosprint. "We could come up with a specific compound, or maintain the current ones.
"But the teams say that the format is fine as is, that the public enjoys tyre strategies.
"But if a fan on the grandstands doesn't see much running in Q3, then that fan casts the blame on Pirelli thinking that we don't want to spend any more money in order to supply more tyres."
Pirelli has copped a lot of flak in recent months over its 2012 rubber with seven-time World Champion Michael Schumacher the biggest critic.
Hembery, though, says drivers often don't take factors like exhaust configuration into consideration.
"I don't agree with whoever says that our tyres' scope of use is too narrow: the temperatures are in line with the estimated values," he said.
"What has changed, heavily, is the way these tyres are used this year. You can see that there's a lot more oversteering on the track. We also hear drivers' comments lamenting a lack of traction, but in my opinion that problem doesn't exist.
"Having changed the exhaust configuration through a rule has undoubtedly made the cars less stable. That causes wheelspin and the tread heats up, so it's normal you can't use the tyre.
"Another point is that nowadays the car performances are a lot closer. Last year there was a second between Red Bull and McLaren, while we've now seen in Spain 16 cars within the same second in Q2.
"It's not true we have intentionally tried to create an impossible challenge. In the next tests with the Renault test car we'll verify what the teams say."

McLaren team boss Martin Whitmarsh has again praised Lewis Hamilton for showing great "maturity" this year and also insisted the 2008 Champion hasn't lost his winning touch.
Hamilton is coming off a difficult weekend in Barcelona after he was stripped from his pole position and sent to the back of the grid as McLaren sent him out for final run in qualifying with too little fuel in his car.
Despite the setback, he still managed to finish eighth and claim four valuable points in the Drivers' Championship.
Whitmarsh says he has been impressed with the level of discipline that the 27-year-old has shown so far this year.
"I think he's been unlucky this year. In many ways the last race was disappointing for the team, but I think Lewis did come away from that event, and I think he does, with a very strong feeling about what he's achieved this year," he said during a Vodafone McLaren Mercedes phone-in.
"Through no fault of his own, I think he had a very severe penalty levelled against him and I think it's very easy at a circuit like Barcelona where overtaking is very, very difficult even with DRS to have some frustration.
"To then be asked by the team to run a two-stop strategy and ultimately have to complete a race with such controlled measured tyre conservation, including 31 laps, more laps than on any other driver on a tyre there, I think he should come away with a feeling that one) he has a car that is capable of being on pole two) he has the speed and capabilities to be on pole - he has been on the front row at every race - and he's driving to I think greater levels of maturity and controlled discipline than perhaps we've seen before."
Although he has started three of the five races on the front row of the grid, Hamilton is yet to win a grand prix this season.
Whitmarsh, though, feels it will only be a matter of time before he is victorious once again.
"So I think it was a fantastic drive [in Spain] and I don't think he, nor I, nor anyone in the team, nor anyone outside the team, believe that he's lost his winning way," he said.
"He's only eight points away from the lead of a Drivers' Championship that's wide open and he must consider himself as a very strong candidate to win in Monaco, to win many more races and to win this year's World Championship."

Nigel Mansell will serve as the driver representative on the stewards' panel at this weekend's Monaco Grand Prix.
The 1992 World Champion, who also filled the role at the British and Belgian Grands Prix last year, will be joined by FIA vice-president Jose Abed and Paul Gutjahr, who is the president of the FIA Hill Climb Commission on the three-man team.
A first-place trophy in Monaco is one of the few things missing from Mansell's silverware cabinet as the 58-year-old's best results are two second-place finishes in 1991 and 1992 with Williams.
Besides racing for the Grove-based Williams, Mansell also had stints with Team Lotus, Ferrari and McLaren during his 16-season F1 career.

Bruno Senna feels his "time will come" following Williams team-mate Pastor Maldonado's success in Barcelona.
While the Brazilian started 17th on the grid at the Circuit de Catalunya and crashed out, Maldonado claimed his maiden win from pole and also helped the team to secure their first grand prix victory since 2004 in the process.
Although his DNF in Spain was not his fault, Senna is under pressure to turn things around and he hopes he will be successful on the streets of Monte Carlo this weekend.
"It's very encouraging to go to Monaco with a car that has just won a race," he said.
"I'm pleased for Pastor. It was a brilliant win after the hardest of years for the team last year, and it was great to see people with big smiles on their faces.
"But as we've seen in F1 this year, we've had five different teams, five different drivers winning five different races.
"So it doesn't mean the car is going to be a race-winner in Monaco, but I really hope it is - and that this time it's going to be the other one.
"I think my time will come. I have taken my time to learn. I can't expect to nail everything every race, but it's a very exciting time to be with this team.
"But first let's get to Monaco, do Thursday practice and wait and see."
Senna's race in Spain came to a halt when Michael Schumacher drove into the back of his FW30. The German called him "an idiot" over the team radio after the incident, but was later slapped with a five-place grid penalty for causing the accident.
"He was coming with much newer rubber, at a faster pace and had to overtake me at all cost, but he probably misjudged my braking point," the 28-year-old said.
"I left him enough space on the right and left for him to make a move if he had wanted to, but he braked quite late and he just hit me.
"I don't care what he called me. It doesn't make any difference to me. It's his opinion.
"I'm sure many drivers have very strong opinions about people when they have an incident, but I wasn't too bothered about it."

Mercedes boss Ross Brawn is confident Michael Schumacher will make it onto the podium this year, saying the team are to blame for some of his poor displays.
Fresh questions have been raised over the seven-time World Champion's future in the sport following his third DNF of the season in Spain a fortnight ago.
The 43-year-old slammed into the back of Bruno Senna and then called the Brazilian an "idiot" over the team radio, but the stewards found that he was the guilty party and slapped him with a five-race grid penalty for this weekend's Monaco Grand Prix.
It has been the story of his season though as he has picked up just two points from the first five races which is in stark contrast to team-mate Nico Rosberg who has 41 points behind his name following a race win in China.
Schumacher, though, still has the backing of his team boss as Brawn feels they haven't exactly helped the German's cause.
"Much has been said and written after his accident in Spain, but we should not forget that WE - the team - have let him down in three of the five races by not delivering the best job possible," he told Bild.
"We must do better. I saw Michael's real driving quality in the first race. Therefore, I believe that we will still se Michael on the podium this year."
Schumacher's three-year contract with the Brackley squad runs out at the end of the season and Brawn says "when the time comes, we will sit down together and talk about Michael's future".

Pastor Maldonado has urged his Williams team to continue to push to fight on top regularly after his maiden Formula 1 victory at the Spanish Grand Prix.
Williams engineering chief Mark Gillan has praised the efforts of his staff - and offers of help from other teams – in getting his outfit ready to run in Monaco this weekend after its garage fire in Spain.
