• Playing with my new camera

    Hi gang

As some of you know, I had a big spares sell-off so that I could get myself a new camera and a couple of accessories. I have been able to do just that - a big thank you to everyone who helped out with that  What makes it even better is that the kit got to stay in the VAME family

I followed JamesT71's advice and bought an Olympus E-420:

Olympus E420 10MP DSLR Camera with 14-42mm Lens.
Dang thing has got more buttons and functions than my laptop

I had a chance to play with it in the great outdoors today - in other words my wife and children went out for the afternoon . It's all still new to me (both photography and the digital SLR, but I just about managed to work out how to use the tripod

Took lots and lots and lots and ..... well you get the idea ... of pics - these are the ones I think are the better ones (i.e. they are in focus and aren't too dark).

I started out with a couple of Jungle Explorers but I got the lighting wrong:

which was kind of annoying as I had spent ages making the frame and then standing the figures up

I know the rope bridge is part of the Field training exercise set:

but I thought it would look better with a Jungle Explorer on it:

then I thought what would be better than a Jungle Explorer on a rope bridge over a jungle pool ...

    two Jungle Explorers, obviously

The camera battery ran out, so I packed everything away and got inside just as it started to rain. I had great fun - I heartily recommend it no matter what kind of camera you've got

  • VTA setup help courtesy RCTech

I found this thread tonight while surfing RCTech http://www.rctech.net/forum/electric-road/251362-vta-tuning-q.html
Some good stuff in there for you TA guys...one thing that jumped out at me was that one of the very first posts mentions that if your tires are caking up, they are probably overheated because the chassis isn't producing enough grip, so the tires themselves are doing too much work.  Judging from some of the other posts, the spec tires are very heat/camber-sensitive and the key to getting them to hook up is a soft soft SOFT setup.  Check it out.

  • AM Training Tower

Just got my mitts on a pretty much mint boxed training tower from a mate at work whos child hood toy it was! 9box is a little battered but still ok) he had it set aside for me about 2 years ago, but we only just managed to sort it out tonight, he wanted a £10 for it as it was gonna get lobbed untill he realised i was into the little fellas

this one has all the original bits and nothing is broken, not even a tab out of place! but i think the seat part is missing? there is a pulley part which weirdly has the AT logo on it????????? (its 100% as it came as it was his childhood toy) there is a black pole? that i just worked out fits accross the ganway part at the top!  its all i could do to manage to assemble it right, after a quick wash in some detergent to get the dust off!

rather pleased with it, the missus isnt as its about 3 feet tall and in the front room at the moment!! oh well

if anyones got a seat or an original rope for the slide part then let me knowwink

  • L579 Forrester

I have a chance to buy an L579 Forrester in .243 Win. The rifle is very clean with at least 98% blue and the wood stock is really nice. The rifle overall shows little wear. It comes with a set of Sako rings. Serial # is 31xxx. The price is $850 and another $50 if I want the peep sight. Is this a fair price?

    Thank you,

  • Sako 375HH Advice

I have never sold a gun before and was thinking of selling my Sako in 375 H&H.  I don't know how to go about that AND I have no idea on what the value of the gun is.  Does anyone have any recommendations on how to sell and the value of my rifle is?

Little information on the rifle ... it is a Sako Standard Sporter that I bought new in 1983 in 375 H&H magnum.  MINT condition with a Leupold 2x7 and a Pachmayr Lo-Swing mount.  Took some pictures with my cell phone.  Would appreciate any advice on value and best place to sell it.  Feel free to respond here OR email me at rondog57@cox.net.  THANKS!

  • Parts for 1970 World Cup Football & Cup

The football for the 1970 World Cup footballer is made out of several pieces that fit together a bit like a jigsaw.  There should be one large white ring, two smaller black ones and two more white ones which are smaller again.  There is a black pin that fits through the middle to hold it together.

Mine has been incomplete for a long time, because one of the black rings and one of the small whites ones are damaged as you can hopefully see in the photo.  It's a bit of a long shot, but does anyone have any spare pieces of the World Cup football I could have to complete mine?

I am also looking for the cup and grass stand if anyone can help.

Lots of 1960's spares on offer in exchange or cash within reason!

  • Howdy from Kinzua kountry

    Hello!

I think I'll wonder over to introduce myself.  I mainly fish for walleye and cats on the upper alleghany (near Kinzua dam).  I've had some fair success and really appreciate the diversity up here... on the other hand I've also traveled down towards the steel city, every once in a while.

I came here from fisherie.. its a good site, but It can be a little hot.

So you guys are an actual fishing club?  thats a good reason to form a little discussion board.  Y'all like to fish for similar things?  me, myself, I have been dipping more toes into more and more things.  used to be that I just throw worms, I experimented a little with fly, then got very interested in catfish, and have been recently throwing plugs at dark for walleye.

Its a nice game.  The fish are awesome; and the food is even better.  Big trout and Pike also hit the same lure at times, and make for some exciting fishing.

Anyway, if you guys got questions about kinzua, I can attempt to answer them.  Quite a few anglers from down your way head up here.  With the lake I can really only save you time; that is I know where the launches are and what they catch up there... But I honestly don't fish it (much).  One too many skunked trip... and fish are at times sparse up there.  I think you need a boat, to maximize your chances at getting lucky.
The waters from the dam to a little ways below warren is my big playground.  Again I'm shore bound, but in spots thats not really a big deal.

had a guy befriend me and share some secrets, not going to blab about them online... but I will prolly fish the river more this coming year, than ever before.  Might post some photos.  I like sharing photos and I like seeing them.  Kind of adds to the appeal of a fishing forum.  I always think of these forums as like a big campfire, where  a small group of anglers chat, get to know each other, tell fishing stories and agree to help each other.  And I've fished for years solo; I'm getting more social in my old age.  Its nice to meet people, provided everyone is being friendly.

well, I'll end the post with a recent photo of one of my nicer catches.  a 21" brownie.. not trophie, but a nice alleghany treat- pretty as a painting, and a brute of a fight.
for a while I was sure it was a walleye cuz' he just stayed Down and fought to stay on the buttom of the river.  He also must have had some largemouth bass Genes, for he had the Biggest mouth!

  • WOLE SOYINKA

Wole SoyinkaWole Soyinka was born on 13 July 1934 at Abeokuta, near Ibadan in western Nigeria. After preparatory university studies in 1954 at Government College in Ibadan, he continued at the University of Leeds, where, later, in 1973, he took his doctorate. During the six years spent in England, he was a dramaturgist at the Royal Court Theatre in London 1958-1959. In 1960, he was awarded a Rockefeller bursary and returned to Nigeria to study African drama. At the same time, he taught drama and literature at various universities in Ibadan, Lagos, and Ife, where, since 1975, he has been professor of comparative literature. In 1960, he founded the theatre group, "The 1960 Masks" and in 1964, the "Orisun Theatre Company", in which he has produced his own plays and taken part as actor. He has periodically been visiting professor at the universities of Cambridge, Sheffield, and Yale.

During the civil war in Nigeria, Soyinka appealed in an article for cease-fire. For this he was arrested in 1967, accused of conspiring with the Biafra rebels, and was held as a political prisoner for 22 months untill 1969. Soyinka has published about 20 works: drama, novels and poetry. He writes in English and his literary language is marked by great scope and richness of words.

As dramatist, Soyinka has been influenced by, among others, the Irish writer, J.M. Synge, but links up with the traditional popular African theatre with its combination of dance, music, and action. He bases his writing on the mythology of his own tribe-the Yoruba-with Ogun, the god of iron and war, at the centre. He wrote his first plays during his time in London, The Swamp Dwellers and The Lion and the Jewel (a light comedy), which were performed at Ibadan in 1958 and 1959 and were published in 1963. Later, satirical comedies are The Trial of Brother Jero (performed in 1960, publ. 1963) with its sequel, Jero's Metamorphosis (performed 1974, publ. 1973), A Dance of the Forests (performed 1960, publ.1963), Kongi's Harvest (performed 1965, publ. 1967) and Madmen and Specialists (performed 1970, publ. 1971). Among Soyinka's serious philosophic plays are (apart from "The Swamp Dwellers") The Strong Breed (performed 1966, publ. 1963), The Road ( 1965) and Death and the King's Horseman (performed 1976, publ. 1975). In The Bacchae of Euripides (1973), he has rewritten the Bacchae for the African stage and in Opera Wonyosi (performed 1977, publ. 1981), bases himself on John Gay's Beggar's Opera and Brecht's The Threepenny Opera. Soyinka's latest dramatic works are A Play of Giants (1984) and Requiem for a Futurologist (1985).heart

Soyinka has written two novels, The Interpreters (1965), narratively, a complicated work which has been compared to Joyce's and Faulkner's, in which six Nigerian intellectuals discuss and interpret their African experiences, and Season of Anomy (1973) which is based on the writer's thoughts during his imprisonment and confronts the Orpheus and Euridice myth with the mythology of the Yoruba. Purely autobiographical are The Man Died: Prison Notes (1972) and the account of his childhood, Aké ( 1981), in which the parents' warmth and interest in their son are prominent. Literary essays are collected in, among others, Myth, Literature and the African World (1975wink

  • LORD GEOGE BYRON

George Gordon, Lord Byron, was the son of Captain John Byron, and Catherine Gordon. He was born with a club-foot and became extreme sensitivity about his lameness. Byron spent his early childhood years in poor surroundings in Aberdeen, where he was educated until he was ten. After he inherited the title and property of his great-uncle in 1798, he went on to Dulwich, Harrow, and Cambridge, where he piled up debts and aroused alarm with bisexual love affairs. Staying at Newstead in 1802, he probably first met his half-sister, Augusta Leigh with whom he was later suspected of having an incestuous relationship.
In 1807 Byron's first collection of poetry, Hours Of Idleness appeared. It received bad reviews. The poet answered his critics with the satire English Bards And Scotch Reviewersin 1808. Next year he took his seat in the House of Lords, and set out on his grand tour, visiting Spain, Malta, Albania, Greece, and the Aegean. Real poetic success came in 1812 when Byron published the first two cantos of Childe Harold's Pilgrimage (1812-1818). He became an adored character of London society; he spoke in the House of Lords effectively on liberal themes, and had a hectic love-affair with Lady Caroline Lamb. Byron's The Corsair (1814), sold 10,000 copies on the first day of publication. He married Anne Isabella Milbanke in 1815, and their daughter Ada was born in the same year. The marriage was unhappy, and they obtained legal separation next year.
When the rumors started to rise of his incest and debts were accumulating, Byron left England in 1816, never to return. He settled in Geneva with Percy Bysshe Shelley, Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, and Claire Clairmont, who became his mistress. There he wrote the two cantos of Childe Harold and "The Prisoner Of Chillon". At the end of the summer Byron continued his travels, spending two years in Italy. During his years in Italy, Byron wrote Lament Of Tasso, inspired by his visit in Tasso's cell in Rome, Mazeppa and started Don Juan, his satiric masterpiece. While in Ravenna and Pisa, Byron became deeply interested in drama, and wrote among others The Two Foscari, Sardanapalaus, Cain, and the unfinished Heaven And Earth.
After a long creative period, Byron had come to feel that action was more important than poetry. He armed a brig, the Hercules, and sailed to Greece to aid the Greeks, who had risen against their Ottoman overlords. However, before he saw any serious military action, Byron contracted a fever from which he died in Missolonghi on 19 April 1824. Memorial services were held all over the land. Byron's body was returned to England but refused by the deans of both Westminster and St Paul's. Finally Byron's coffin was placed in the family vault at Hucknall Torkard, near Newstead Abbey in Nottinghamshire.
